Sandra Meech

Contemporary quilt textile artist and author

Arctic landscape - 'Meltdown'

In response to a personal concern for the effects of milder winters as a result of global warming, Sandra has created this series of stitched textile pieces. Inspired by glaciers and ice melting and working with photographs taken in Iceland and Arctic Canada. Working in material collage and painted papers, then transferring whole pieces onto cloth. Stitching through with wire, Sandra is then able to manipulate the surface for a 3-dimensional effect. Copper metal was added for accent and all are machine stitched. The end result is both thought provoking and visually stunning.

Sandra will be giving a talk on her work and her latest book 'Connecting Art to Stitch' at the Gallery on:

'Erosion' by Tracy Nicholls
The four artists met whilst undertaking MA studies at the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham. They work in different materials but each is concerned not only with the construction of the work, but with the negative spaces that result, and how these spaces contrast with, accentuate and highlight the made objects. The 'spaces' allow light to permeate so the shadows become part of the architecture of the pieces.
